The scheme for the extension to the existing indoor courts building involves the provision of an additional two tennis courts, bringing the total number of indoor courts to five. In order to create the space for these additional courts it was necessary to propose extending the building outside the current boundary of the Club's site. We suggested to the local authority at early design stage that there was an opportunity to provide a significant public realm aspect to the scheme, whereby a well lit public plaza could be created. The creation of the public plaza is a significant urban design contribution to the area of Castleknock and creates a transition space for pedestrians and cyclists connecting from the old Navan Road to the existing M50 overpass. A symbiosis is created between the extended building and the new plaza and an opportunity for passive surveillance is created. The third component of the scheme is the creation of a new club car park for 107 cars, with a well lit and safe environment for club members. The base of the extended bulding will be constructed of GGBS concrete, which will be light in colour and offers great possibilities in terms of architectutral expression. The Western elevation presented to the Old Navan Road features a tennis player figure, which will be recessed into the GGBS concrete, creating a strong urban prescence and signifying the function of the building. Similarly, on the North elevation to the plaza, large letters will be recessed into the concrete base to create a strong sculptural prescenece onto the plaza.
